Only two years earlier, East Germany had erected the Berlin Wall to prevent its own citizens from fleeing to the West. Concrete barriers, guard towers, barbed wire, and armed soldiers became the physical divide between two competing visions of the world: one built on individual liberty, the other on state control.

Rather than celebrating America's strength, Kennedy focused on something more enduring—the value of freedom itself.

"Freedom has many difficulties and democracy is not perfect; but we've never had to put a wall up to keep our people in, to prevent them from leaving..."

Those words became one of the Cold War's clearest moral arguments. Kennedy reminded the world that free societies do not need walls to imprison their citizens because liberty is sustained by choice, not coercion.
