In the spring of 1989, hundreds of thousands of students, workers, and ordinary citizens gathered in Beijing's Tiananmen Square calling for political reform, greater accountability, freedom of speech, and an end to government corruption.

After weeks of peaceful demonstrations, the Chinese government declared martial law.

On the night of June 3–4, 1989, military units entered Beijing and forcibly cleared the square and surrounding streets. The exact number of people killed remains unknown, with estimates ranging from several hundred to several thousand.

The following morning, June 5, 1989, an unidentified man carrying nothing more than shopping bags stepped into the path of a column of tanks.

His name remains unknown.

His fate remains uncertain.

His courage became immortal.

Known simply as Tank Man, his act of peaceful defiance has become one of history's most enduring symbols of the individual standing against overwhelming power.
